Bose Bluetooth Headset Series 2

Bose have released the Series 2 of their best selling Bluetooth headset. It features a familiar design and is engineered to react automatically as noise levels change, allowing you to hear your end of the call better. It also features an improved noise-rejecting microphone system that differentiates between your voice and background noise, which allows the person on the other end of the call to better hear you above both noise and wind. The Bose Bluetooth headset is compact, light and well-balanced, and now you can choose between right- or left-ear versions.

Key Features

  • Adaptive audio adjustment technology automatically adjusts headset volume depending on surrounding noise: a constant listening level is maintained as you move between quiet and loud environments.
  • Noise-rejecting microphone filters out noise around you, allowing the person on the other end of the call to hear more of your voice.
  • TriPort acoustic structure ensures natural-sounding voice quality and allows for louder volume in noisy environments.
  • Small, Medium and Large size StayHear removable silicone tips increase stability with a comfortable, personalized fit. No need for an ear hook.
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 4.5 hours of talk time and 100 hours of standby time per charge.
  • Battery indicator shows battery status from green to amber to red. Complete recharge takes 3 hours.
  • Answer/end call button makes it easy to answer and end calls with a simple pinch that won’t dislodge the headset. Also enables pairing with your Bluetooth phone.
  • Power slider switch lets you easily turn headset power on (green) or off (red) one-handed, with a quick slide of the switch.
  • Wall and USB chargers provide two options for charging the headset battery.
  • Carrying case protects headset during transport and storage.

Easy to Use

It is important to be able to operate the headset with one hand while driving or on the go. The Bose Bluetooth headset has dedicated buttons for call start/end, volume and power, all conveniently located on the top and bottom edges of the device. Such design ensures that each action, from taking and ending calls to inserting or removing the headset, can be accomplished easily with one hand.
Bose-bluetooth-headset-series-2-left-ear

Designed for Best Possible Fit

Similar to the original Bose Bluetooth headset, Series 2 utilizes a side-specific design. However, with Series 2 you can choose either a right- or left-ear design. Such choice allows you to get the fit that is right for you. The headset features modern curved design, which fits facial features. Control buttons are placed on top and bottom of the device, which allows the use of a natural pinching motion that won’t dislodge the headset from your ear.
In addition to this the soft StayHear silicone tip will keep the headset comfortably and securely in place. StayHear tip distributes contact over a greater area inside the ear, avoiding known pressure points. The headset stays in your ear without being too tight – and without an ear hook.

Improved Sound Quality at Both Ends of Your Call

Bose Bluetooth headset Series 2 features a unique technology, which automatically senses noise level around you and adjusts the headset volume accordingly. In a quiet room it will decrease the volume of the headset. In a loud environment, on the other hand, the volume increases so you can better hear your call. Overall, the listening level remains steady. In addition to that Bose TriPort® acoustic technology ensures a natural voice quality, no matter what the volume level of the headset is. It is important to note that Bose Bluetooth headset Series 2 does not have noise cancelling.
It is as important for the person on the other end of the call to hear you clearly too. The Bose Bluetooth headset features an improved noise-rejecting microphone system that differentiates between your voice and background noise. One microphone senses your voice and acoustically rejects background noise that interferes with it. A second microphone works to reduce the unwanted effects of a windy environment. While the system acoustically rejects noise, it doesn’t use any electronics to actively cancel ambient noise. This technology ensures that the listener hears more of you and less noise (e.g. wind).

A2DP Audio Streaming

The Boss Bluetooth headset supports A2DP technology, which allows you to enjoy mobile media content when not on a call. The Bluetooth profile for streaming audio content allows you to listen to turn-by-turn directions as well as music, podcasts and other media stored on your phone. The headset provides quality audio, but not in stereo because it is limited to a single ear.

PlayStation3 Support

PS3 supports both the hands-free and headset profiles, so the Bose Bluetooth headset Series 2 can be used for chat and in-game communications.

Connect 2 Phones Simultaneously

Bose Bluetooth headset Series 2 features Multipoint technology, which allows the headset to maintain a connection to two devices at the same time. So, if you have 2 mobile phones for work and personal use, you can use the same headset with either phone. No matter which phone rings, the call will come through the headset. When powered on, the headset will automatically try to connect to the last two phones with which it was used.

Bose Bluetooth Headset vs. Jawbone ERA vs. Plantronics Discovery 975 Comparison

There is a range of Bluetooth headsets on the market – they come from different manufacturers, have various features, are priced differently, etc. And it is not surprising if you can’t decide which one to buy. Every person will choose the one based on their own preferences – whether it’s features, style, usability or something else. In this post I wanted to compare three Bluetooth headsets that are arguably the best ones on the market in 2011 – Bose Bluetooth Headset, Jawbone ERA and Plantronics Discovery 975. Keep reading and you might find the headset that is perfect for YOU.

Bose Bluetooth Headset

bose bluetooth headset

FEATURES

The first ever Bluetooth headset from BOSE comes with an adaptive audio adjustment technology. It allows you to be heard by the person on the other end of the line without distractions from background noises. The device is also capable of automatically changing its volume and filtering out surrounding sounds.

The headset comes with high quality replaceable silicon tips. These tips will fit most ears, and will firmly hold the device in place, so an over-the-ear hook is not required.

The fully charged battery of this little thing held for about 4.5 hours of talking and should last about 175 hours on standby. The device also has a battery indicator that blinks from green to red.

The device has an answer/end call button that can be easily flicked, a power slide switch and it comes with portable Wall and USB chargers.

Bose Bluetooth Headset is designed for right ear only, so if you are used to having your headset in the left ear – this one is not for you.

STYLE

Bose Bluetooth headset has a somewhat unique design – its sleek black color and silver lining, curved to an attractive finish, simply says professionalism at first glance.

Personally, I found this one appealing – maybe because I like black. Its curve and other design elements make it look elegant and sophisticated.

USABILITY

I found this headset to be really comfortable – I tend to forget that something is in my year after  a short while. To tell you the truth I’m not that worried about the headset being designed for right ear only. I mostly use headsets in the car while driving, and wear them in the right ear anyway. I guess if you use the headset all the time, your ear might get irritated and you’d want to change the ear, and this particular one might not be suitable. But for most users it shouldn’t be a showstopper.

Voice quality is actually very good. Having this one come from a company that specializes in music audio, I kind of wished they’d thought of having kicked it up a notch and installed some music features.

PRICE

This is the most expensive headset out of the three in this comparison, but if you take the Bose quality and other features into account $149.95 might not be such a big price to pay.

Jawbone ERA headset

jawbone era

FEATURES

The Jawbone ERA is the only Bluetooth headset with military-grade technology that was originally designed for tank commanders and helicopter pilots to cancel out any background noise during war skirmishes. Its 10 mm wideband speaker had me experience a whole new level of HD-quality sound at its portable best. It is also equipped with a built-in accelerometer and patented Motion technology that allows you to either shake the headset to pair it with your phone, or tap it to answer calls.

I had no need to take off the headset to check the battery status – simply check its level on my phone. If the phone is not within reach, you can easily check the battery status by pressing the TALK button and you will instantly get an estimated remaining talk time. The headset will also remind you to charge it up when it feels it’s running low on fuel. The battery lasted around 5 hours of talking.

Jawbone Era comes with 8 different size earbuds, so everybody should be able to find the one that fits perfectly.

A bit of good news for the eco-friendly buyers – Jawbone ERA packaging is made of 100% recyclable materials.

STYLE

The overall concept of Jawbone ERA’s design reminds me of those clever crochet designs – it is intricate but delicate at the same time. The color palette too is well thought through. It comes in 4 color options and they all look very modern.

Overall, I like the design and different color options.

USABILITY

I certainly loved the motion detecting feature of this one, where you’d just shake it and have it automatically pair up with a device that is closer than 30 feet away from you. You can install some cool apps, which will allow you to send emails or text messages using your voice, change languages, etc.

Jawbone ERA is actually pretty comfy to wear, although it might start to get irritating if used for long periods. Its noise filtering function is good – you can be near a landing plane and the person on the other end of the line would still hear you. All in all, it’s a good solid headset.

PRICE

At the moment Jawbone Era costs between $100 and $130, but the price is likely to go down when new models are released.

Plantronics Discovery 975 Bluetooth Headset

Discovery 975

FEATURES

Plantronics Discovery 975 features the latest advanced audio technology, which cancels background noise while retaining the natural sound of your voice during conversations in whatever surrounding you might find yourself in. This headset also has a built-in wind protection technology that basically aims to block off wind noise. Another useful feature worth mentioning is a multipoint technology that allows the headset to pair and maintain connections with two devices.

Plantronics Discovery 975 comes with patented gel ear tips, which ensure comfortable and secure fit. It has a fantastic voice alert system, which warns you about incoming calls, battery status, lost connection and more.

Battery should last for up to 5 hours of uninterrupted talk. The final, and, in my opinion, best feature of this headset is the self charging case which is very handy when you mostly use the headset in the car. Just place the headset into the cradle once you arrive to your destination, and it will last for weeks (of light/medium use of course) without charging.

STYLE

Plantronics Discovery 975 has a rather simple, but stylish design. It doesn’t have any complicated patterns, just a straight, silver rod and black colored earpiece, with a little silver detail on it. When I first saw it, I immediately thought of sci-fi. It reminded me of those earphones I’ve seen in Star Trek or many other classic space movies.

USABILITY

I spend a lot of time on the phone for business and personal calls. I have had this Bluetooth earpiece for around 6 months now and absolutely love it. The call quality is great, and it’s very comfortable to wear. It’s light, comfortable, has excellent range, and the battery seems to last forever. It also comes with a handy charger case so it’s convenient to store and always charged up!

PRICE

Plantronics Discovery 975 RRP is $99.99, but you can get it cheaper on sites like Amazon.

CONCLUSION

Each headset in this review comes with unique features, style elements and technologies. It is very hard to recommend a headset that will suit everyone. So, if you are into style and brand names – Bose Bluetooth Headset is the best option for you. If you are looking for the most feature-rich headset try Jawbone Era.

But I would have to say that Plantronics Discovery 975 is the winner of this review. It is lightweight, affordable, offers amazing sound quality and of course has a great portable charging case.

Bose Bluetooth Headset Review

buy bose bluetooth headset

Pros:

  • Clear sound from earpiece
  • Very simple operation
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Excellent sound on the other end – no need to shout
  • Fantastic call quality in noisy environment
  • Lightweight
  • Stylish design

Cons:

  • Right-ear only
  • No ability to stream music

I have been looking for a perfect Bluetooth headset for a long time… I’ve tried multiple Plantroincs models, multiple Jabra, Jawbone, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola and BlueAnt models… The trouble with all of these headsets was that my callers would complain of hearing themselves echo, or that it sounded like I was in a tin can. And unfortunately this was consistent for all of the devices.

When I first read about the Bose Bluetooth headset I was skeptical myself. So, after checking their return policy, I decided to buy one, thinking I’d just bring it back if it didn’t work.

Well, no need. It DID work – and worked amazingly well. As a test, I called my friend and asked him if the call quality was any better. He commented that he could hear me more clearly than he ever had and that the annoying echo was gone. I repeated the test with some of my colleagues to see if they noticed any difference. The resounding answer was yes – a vast improvement.

The headset’s range (how far it can be from the mobile phone) is about 10 meters – give or take. But be warned, once you get past 10 meters the call quality drops dramatically, so you should stay inside the range. Pairing the Bose Bluetooth Headset, which I did with a Nexus One and an iPhone 4, is incredibly simple. By pressing and holding the Call button for about five seconds, I got the blue Bluetooth light on the Headset to blink slowly, which means it’s in pairing mode—both phones found it immediately and paired in seconds.

It doesn’t have some features that some other headsets have: It doesn’t do A2DP; It doesn’t talk to you; It doesn’t read your emails or text messages to you; and, It doesn’t play your music for you. But I wanted a Bluetooth headset to make phone calls…to be heard by the person I called and to hear the person I called. This headset does that perfectly. And, if I want to listen to the music, I don’t want to hear it in only one ear in mono – I would rather put my headphones on and enjoy the music in stereo.

In addition to the call quality this headset offers extreme level of comfort. The eargels that come with the Bose Bluetooth headset provide the most comfortable fit that I have ever encountered out of the box. I have been be using the headset all day long without the usual Bluetooth device discomfort.

I like the fact that this headset has real buttons – a button for accepting a call and hanging up, a volume up button and a volume down button… and a real power switch. The fact is that this headset is simple and user friendly.

I also like the black matte finish, as it eliminates the common problem with fingerprints. I like the balance – no problem with it wanting to tilt down. I like the adaptive sound – it gets louder when I’m in a noisy environment. I can hear the people I am talking to and people don’t complain about the sound on their end. THAT IS HUGE!

If you want a Bluetooth headset that really performs, spend a few extra dollars and get the Bose Bluetooth Headset, it is a little pricy but it exudes quality, and as well we all know: ‘If you buy cheap, you buy twice.’

Bose Bluetooth Headset Call Quality and Features

buy bose bluetooth headset

In my first post I reviewed Bose Bluetooth Headset’s Design and Comfort. This post will be about its features and call quality.

Call Quality

Probably one of my biggest issues with Bluetooth headsets is that when you move from a quiet area to a loud place, you have to raise your voice inline with the background noise, or press the headset further into your ear to hear the person your are speaking with. Of course, this is not the case with all headsets, but it is a problem I have experienced on more than a few occasions.

Thankfully, Bose has employed some cool new technologies to combat this: Bose TriPort and Bose Adaptive Audio Adjustment. So what do they do? Well, Triport deals with acoustics and speech reproduction and the Adaptive Audio Adjustment one measures incoming speech and background noise and then adjusts voice levels automatically. In my tests Adaptive Audio Adjustment worked very well. I could occasionally hear the volume adjusting as noise levels changed, but volume as the caller heard it stayed mostly consistent.

The headset’s microphone is housed in a special compartment that was designed to pick up what you’re saying and reject the external noises surrounding you. This aspect of the Bose Bluetooth Headset is a standout feature by itself – it really has to be experienced to be believed.

Overall call quality was very good as well. That said, it wasn’t perfect and a few callers did say that I sounded “a bit far away” during conversations – although this could have been down to reception issues. Nevertheless, I had no complaints with the quality on this end – it didn’t drop, fuzz-up or deplete once during testing.

Features

Indicators

Bose Bluetooth Headset has two LED indicators. One tells you when the device is connected and another one is for the battery. Battery indicator shows battery status from green to amber to red. Both indicators are located on the headset’s inner face and cannot be seen whilst the headset is on.

Battery Life

Bose Bluetooth Headset offers extremely good battery life. The claimed battery life of the device is 4.5 hours of talk time or 175 hours of standby time, which is over a week. Larger headsets can get even longer life, but for its size the Bose’s performance is excellent.

If you are only making the odd call on it then you will probably manage to get a few days, if not a week, out of a single charge. More frequent users will need to charge it every night though.
The device uses a standard microUSB connector, and comes with a flat branded power adapter with an interchangeable plug.

Removable silicone tips

Bose Bluetooth Headset comes with removable silicone tips of different sizes – S, M and L. These are designed to increase stability with a comfortable, personalized fit for the right ear. Because of this feature, you will not need to use an ear hook.

Answer/end call button

This button is designed to make it easy to answer and end calls with a simple pinch that won’t dislodge the headset. It also enables pairing with your phone via Bluetooth.

Power slider switch

Power slider lets you easily turn headset power on or off one-handed, with a quick slide of the switch.

Bose Bluetooth Headset Design and Comfort

buy bose bluetooth headset

Bose is synonymous with quality. It’s range of headphones, speakers, docking stations and now TVs leave practically every other manufacturer out in the cold. Bose, as we all know, make premium products, in that, it doesn’t scrimp on quality or design – something that is reflected in its prices.

Bose’s first ever single-ear bluetooth headset is produced to the standards we have come to expect from one of the world’s finest technology manufacturers. The headset does not feature any new or unique materials, special forms or other marketing elements. Bose’s magic is in the maximum simplicity and a special appeal that is somewhat difficult to explain.

The Bose Bluetooth Headset is a well-presented, rectangular and lightweight device that uses proprietary technology to provide you with what the good people at Bose claim to be the ultimate Bluetooth headset. The device looks unusual and original, totally in the style of Bose.

The headset measures 0.7 by 1.8 by 1.3 inches (HWD), and weighs 0.48 ounces. It’s mostly black, with a silver line running around the edges and a silver Bose logo on the front.

First things first, though: what about comfort? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that the Bose Bluetooth Headset is extremely comfortable. In fact, we’d probably go as far as saying it’s one of the most comfortable single-ear Bluetooth headsets on the market.

This superior comfort is achieved through Bose’s silicon StayHear tips, which anchor the device comfortably in your ear without the use of ear hooks, which is great as it “works” with the inside of your ear – instead of against it – to create grip without applying any unnecessary pressure on the sensitive parts of your ear.

To get the Bose headset in place before making a call, you simply pop it in your right ear and twist it clockwise. Once you’ve done this the device is secured in place and you are free to move around and even violently shake your head if the conversation warrants it. It sits snugly and securely. For road warriors who will get hours of use from their Bluetooth headset every day, the Bose is uniquely ear-friendly.

The headset features the following hardware keys: on/off switch, volume controls and call answer. These are all well placed and extremely easy to access whilst using the device. Volume controls and a large button for initiating and ending calls sit on top of the headset. The power slider is on the bottom, a welcome change from headsets that require holding the call button for various amounts of time to turn on and off. Buttons are easy to press and easy to distinguish from one another.

Battery status and Bluetooth connection status lights are located on the back of the headset. The battery light flashes green, yellow, or red, depending on the power remaining.

Traditionally for the company, Bose Bluetooth headset comes in a huge box. It contains a soft carrying case for the headset, a USB charger and wall adapter, and small, medium and large tips for your ears. The tips may be different sizes, but they’ve got one thing in common: they’re all for your right ear. The Bose Bluetooth Headset is designed to be used in right ear only.
